Christmas can be a difficult time for families already in financial need.
Did you know:
27% of New Zealand children live in poverty (Unicef NZ)
In New Zealand, the poverty line after deducting housing costs for a household with two adults and two children lies at $600 per week or $31,200 annually in 2016 dollars (Ministry for Social Development)
For a sole parent it is $385 per week or $20,200 annually (MSD)
How you’ve helped
In recent years, through The Big Give, you have helped around 300 families celebrate Christmas like everyone else in Nelson Tasman: at a family bbq or playing with new toys or batting on the sand cricket pitch at the beach. In the last 10 years alone, you have donated almost $1.2 million total to Fifeshire to help 11,000 people in our region.
The Big Give is our highest profile fundraiser of the year and it’s our way to directly involve the Nelson community to help families celebrate this important holiday without worry and with joy.
Gift cards mean families decide
For Christmas 2019 our focus is to give families choices in how to use their Fifeshire support. Gift cards are the best way to do this. Your donation of a gift card for food, toys, books, clothing, anything you wish and in any amount, will let recipient families decide how to celebrate.
This year make your donation of gift cards in any amount for food, books, clothing, toys, a Prezzy card, or other items.
So, next time you’re in line, grab a gift card for families in need. Helping them have more choice gives more meaning to your donation.

What businesses and workplaces can do to help
There are so many ways your business can contribute to The Big Give. Here are a few ideas:
Mufti day with gold coin donations (and the company can match the funds raised!)
Donate gift cards for food, toys, or clothes
Volunteer to help pack and sort the gifts for our families
Donate a percentage of your sales over a week
Put up a Christmas tree and take presents of non-perishable food or gift cards to send our way for packing gift bags
Put your staff to the creative test and have them come up with a clever idea
